“A central ingredient is empty house,” says Mika Obayashi about her gossamer installations of paper and twine. The artist constructs delicate, but immersive works that cling from the ceiling in exact squares or triangles, their strings hovering simply above the ground. Exact and natural, the installations query the connection between materials and house and “will be checked out, in, and thru unexpectedly.”

Her works evoke Lenore Tawney’s famend Cloud collection, atmospheric sculptures of innumerable knotted threads. Obayashi is equally meditative, with initiatives like “Gospel of Three Dimensions” layering hand-made paper dyed with indigo right into a placing gradient. A central cavern permits the viewer to step inside, enveloping them in an ethereal cascade of blue hues.

The artist is at present working towards an MFA in Fibers and Materials Research at Tyler College of Artwork and Structure, the place she’s exploring the territory between the acquainted and non- in on a regular basis objects. You may comply with her newest initiatives on Instagram.
