One of many brightest and densest meteor showers of the yr, the Perseids pour down each August, leaving glowing streaks of their wake. Photographer Josh Dury captured this yr’s stellar spectacle close to Stonehenge, exhibiting the fireballs illuminating the sky above the prehistoric grounds in Wiltshire, England.

On August 9, Dury camped out on the historic monument—which aligns the dawn on the summer season solstice and the sundown on the winter solstice—to seize 46 photographs he later stitched collectively into the gorgeous composite above. Between 50 and 100 meteors are usually seen per hour when the Perseids arrive, and the photographer spent about three hours on location.

With the sensible Milky Manner bisecting the body, the ensuing picture is a placing tribute to celestial wonders previous and current. “For me, the pertinent narrative of this historic firework show, shaped by a few of the most historic astronomical materials of our photo voltaic system appeared a becoming tribute to the world-famous astronomical monument that’s Stonehenge,” he advised PetaPixel.

Prints of “Perseid Meteors over Stonehenge,” which was named the Astronomy Image of the Day by NASA,  can be found on Dury’s web site. Comply with his work on Instagram.
