Before Chicago Fire, David Eigenberg Held This Uncommon Job in Utah

David Eigenberg, an actor best known for his role as firefighter Christopher Herrmann in Chicago Fire, has had a remarkable journey in the entertainment industry. Despite his success, Eigenberg candidly expressed in a recent interview that he once felt his career was nearing its end. This revelation adds a layer of depth to his story, showcasing the challenges and triumphs that have shaped him into a beloved character over the past decade.

How to Watch

Viewers can catch the Season 14 premiere of Chicago Fire on Wednesday, October 1, at 9/8c on NBC and Peacock.

In a candid interview on the One Chicago Podcast, hosted by P.D. producer Brian Luce, Eigenberg shared reflections on his career, particularly the pivotal moment that led to his role in Chicago Fire. Before landing the part, he was at a career low, feeling adrift and contemplating a return to contracting work. “I walked in and I was like, dead in the water seven years after Sex and the City,” Eigenberg recalled, highlighting the stark contrast between his past successes and his feelings of despair.

Facing Career Uncertainty

Eigenberg recounted a period when he had no acting prospects, even obtaining a general contracting license in California. He humorously shared how bleak his situation was, saying, “I was dead. I’m over. It’s washed up.” However, serendipity struck when he encountered an old friend who encouraged him to audition for Chicago Fire. This fateful meeting revived his hopes, leading him back into the world of acting.

When Eigenberg walked into the audition, he came face-to-face with series creator Dick Wolf, a meeting that would change his life. Eigenberg felt an immediate connection with Wolf, noting, “I know that Dick responded to me.” This genuine interaction gave him confidence and he left the audition feeling optimistic about the outcome.

The Audition That Changed Everything

After the audition, Eigenberg received an unforgettable phone call from his agent. “I gave [my wife] a thumbs up and I said, ‘Okay, thank you. Close the deal. Whatever they offer me, whatever they’re giving me, don’t change it,'” he laughed as he remembered that pivotal moment. His eagerness to accept the role showcased just how much it meant to him, especially after a challenging time in his career.

During the podcast, Luce reminisced about their first meeting on set, where showrunner Derek Haas described Eigenberg as a “ball of fire that shouldn’t have been.” Notably, Haas had initially envisioned a very different character for Herrmann, someone larger than life, akin to Little John from Robin Hood. However, Eigenberg’s audition quickly changed that perception, solidifying his place as the heart of Firehouse 51.

The Heart of the Show

Eigenberg, embodying the spirit of Herrmann, has become a beloved character among Chicago Fire fans. His character not only provides comic relief but also exemplifies camaraderie and resilience. As Eigenberg himself noted, the team quickly recognized that they had found their Herrmann—and with that, the beating heart of their show.
