The International Senior Invitational: A Celebration of Golf and Community at Cartersville Country Club
The doors of Cartersville Country Club, nestled in the foothills of North Georgia’s picturesque mountains and just a short drive from Atlanta, don’t frequently swing open for outside tournaments. However, when they do, it’s a momentous occasion not only for the club but also for the community. This is particularly true during the International Senior Invitational, an event that has quickly become a highlight since its inception in 2023.
Community Engagement and Volunteerism
Jonathan Mattox, the general manager of Cartersville, expressed the club’s commitment to community engagement. “As many as 70 members will volunteer at the tournament throughout the week,” he shared. This enthusiastic involvement turns the event into a celebration of golf that extends beyond the fairways, as local high school players come out to observe some of the best competitors, including a roster of U.S. Golf Association champions.
The event even benefits from the support of a title sponsor: Cartersville Georgia Power. This partnership not only underscores the local business community’s commitment but also signifies the tournament’s importance as a landmark event in the region.
Tournament Details and Format
Set for October 8-11, the International Senior Invitational is more than just a gathering of seasoned golfers. It operates as a “tournament within a tournament” format, crowning both an individual champion after 54 holes and a three-man team champion based on a three-count-two scoring format. It’s an innovative structure that adds layers of competition and excitement for both players and spectators.
“Being a private club, we typically don’t do many outside events,” Mattox noted. “But our membership and our board really love having this tournament every year, as it allows us to support several local organizations while showcasing our little town.”
Charitable Initiatives
One of the standout features of the International Senior Invitational is its dedication to philanthropy. Last year, the tournament raised approximately $10,000 for local charities, with funds from this year’s event designated to benefit Advocates for Children. This nonprofit offers vital services to families and children in Northwest Georgia, with a special focus on supporting its Newman House—a transitional housing facility designed to assist families in distress.
A Lineup of Champions
This year promises to deliver a thrilling lineup of competitors. Notably absent is Doug Hanzel, the defending champion and 2013 U.S. Senior Amateur titleholder. However, his teammate Bob Royak, 2019 U.S. Senior Amateur champion, is part of this year’s competition. Joining them are some of the most accomplished players in senior amateur golf, including Mike McCoy, the reigning U.S. Senior Amateur champion and notable Walker Cup captain.
Other impressive talents like Rusty Strawn, the 2022 U.S. Senior Amateur champion, and intricate international players—Derik Patton and Joe Lyons—simulate a merger of talent and diversity. While Patton holds accolades such as the 2021 Irish Senior Men’s Amateur Open title, Lyons boasts a remarkable history of multiple championship wins that underline his status as a formidable competitor.
A Diverse Global Field
The International Senior Invitational is not just limited to American players; it features teams from across the globe. Participants will come from various southeastern states, extending as far as Washington. International representation includes competitors from Scotland, Ireland, England, and Denmark, showcasing a truly global atmosphere.
As the participants arrive, they will encounter Cartersville Country Club’s challenging conditions—lightning-fast greens and rough that rewards precision and skill. Mattox hinted at modifications to the opening hole, saying, “We’ve made a little modification to No. 1 with some additional bunkers, giving the opening hole a fresh look.” This addition will surely test the players’ abilities and set a competitive tone for the tournament.
The Heart of a Community
The International Senior Invitational is more than just a golf tournament; it represents a significant collaboration between the club, local businesses, and community members. The support from volunteers, players, and sponsors illustrates the close-knit bonds that define Cartersville. With each swing of the club, this tournament not only celebrates the spirit of golf but also strengthens the fabric of the community, making a lasting impact for both players and local residents alike.
The commitment to charitable endeavors, the gathering of distinguished golfers, and the excitement surrounding the event come together to make the International Senior Invitational not just a tournament but a cherished occasion that highlights the vibrant life and values of Cartersville.
