Gathering for Freedom: The 32nd International Law and Religion Symposium
In October 2025, hundreds of delegates from around the globe assembled in Provo, Utah, at Brigham Young University (BYU) for the 32nd annual International Law and Religion Symposium. Organized by the International Center for Law and Religion Studies, this year’s theme—“Building Paths to Flourishing Regional, National and International Protections of Religious Freedom”—echoed the growing global emphasis on safeguarding the fundamental right to practice one’s faith.
A Warm Welcome
The symposium began with a heartfelt welcome from Brett G. Scharffs, the Director of the International Center for Law and Religion Studies. Scharffs urged attendees to focus on the needs of the rising generation, reminding them of the importance of integrating youth into the ongoing dialogue about religious freedom. “As you talk amongst yourselves and as you have these dialogues about religious freedom,” he stated, “do not forget about the young people of our planet. The rising generation needs this more than anyone so that they become part of the dialogue.”
Global Representation
This year’s symposium saw the participation of eight African nations—Botswana, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, and Tanzania. Delegates from these countries passionately shared insights about the challenges and progress of religious freedom in their respective contexts, fostering a rich exchange of ideas and experiences among peers. The diverse backgrounds of the attendees highlighted the universal importance of this theme.

Personal Experiences
Attendees shared powerful testimonials about their experiences at the symposium. Ahmed Salisu Garba, Vice Chancellor of Al-Muhibbah Open University in Nigeria, expressed his awe at the event’s organization. “I do not have one word or even a sentence to describe my experience at this symposium. It was fantastic,” he said, marveling at the dedication of the Center’s staff and the engaging environment fostered during the event.
Interfaith Dialogue and Cooperation
The symposium facilitated critical discussions on various facets of religious freedom, covering legal, social, and cultural dimensions. Attendees engaged in workshops and panel discussions, where legal experts, religious leaders, and scholars exchanged best practices and innovative solutions for enhancing religious freedoms in their nations.
Moreover, these interactions underscored the significance of interfaith dialogue in building bridges across cultures. The symposium featured diverse perspectives, encouraging participants to consider how different religions interact and coexist within their societies.
A Unique Cultural Experience
In addition to the symposium activities, delegates had the unique opportunity to attend the General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This event, produced biannually, presents key messages and inspirational talks from church leaders and was attended by many participants, enriching their understanding of faith in practice.
The musical highlight was undoubtedly the performance by the renowned Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square, which resonated as a testament to the cultural and spiritual vibrancy of the community. The convergence of legal discussions and spiritual experiences created an atmosphere of holistic engagement.
A Global Community
With 135 delegates from 47 countries in attendance, the symposium illustrated the global commitment to protecting religious freedom. This gathering emphasized the urgency of promoting laws and policies that uphold individual rights across diverse societies. The delegates represented a wide range of backgrounds and expertise, underscoring the collaborative spirit that is essential for advancing religious freedom.
As the discussions unfolded, many participants used the platform to collaborate on projects, share resources, and strategize future initiatives aimed at strengthening the legal and social frameworks of religious freedom around the world.
Looking Forward
The International Center for Law and Religion Studies remains at the forefront of this critical discourse, providing resources and support for those dedicated to the cause of religious freedom. Their ongoing efforts to engage scholars, policymakers, and activists will continue to play a crucial role in shaping the landscape of religious rights globally.
