Empowering Change: Talita Boodhram and the TechWomen 2025 Programme

A Rising Star in Entrepreneurship

Talita Boodhram, a 23-year-old entrepreneur, has captured attention not only for her innovative spirit but also for her journey from high school science project to business leader. At just 16, she founded MiDesk Global, a revolutionary enterprise that highlights her commitment to education and sustainability. MiDesk is a solar-powered schoolbag that magically transforms into a desk and chair, tailored to equip children—especially in rural areas—with a proper workspace. The design further features solar lights and USB charging ports, merging practicality with eco-friendliness.

A Transformative Experience in Silicon Valley

Recently, Boodhram joined four other South African women engineers as part of the esteemed TechWomen 2025 programme in California’s Silicon Valley and Washington D.C. This initiative aims to empower women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) by providing them with vital networks and mentorship opportunities. For Boodhram, this experience was more than just a trip; it was vital for pursuing her vision: “My goal is to reach 1 million children by 2030,” she stated. The knowledge and connections she gained from TechWomen serve as crucial tools for her mission of systemic change in education.

A Diverse and Talented South African Contingent

The South African group at TechWomen 2025 comprised four remarkable engineers, each bringing unique visions and expertise to the table.

  • Nonjabulo Gumede: As CEO of Maichatron, Gumede leads an engineering firm specializing in industrial automation and mechanical design. Her goal is to advance Africa’s technological landscape. “I want to drive the technological advancement of Africa through mechatronics and engineering,” she asserts.

  • Matebogo Mangaba: A mechanical engineer from Burgersfort, Mangaba was inspired by her father’s craftsmanship to pursue a career in engineering. Her story reflects a broader narrative about women in technical fields. “Curiosity belongs to girls too,” she emphasizes, challenging societal stereotypes.

  • Makhosi Khoza: A passionate civil engineer, Khoza believes in the need to rewrite narratives about women’s capabilities in technology. “It is our responsibility to rewrite that story,” she explains, encouraging others to break free from societal limitations.

  • Tshegofatso Isaac: An advocate for inclusive design, Isaac focuses on creating products and services accessible to all. For her, the insights gained from TechWomen are not just for personal growth; they translate into tangible impacts within her community.

Fostering Global Connections

Since 2013, South African women in STEM have been participating in TechWomen, joining a global network of emerging leaders. This rigorous programme matches participants with leading tech companies, offering invaluable insights and fostering professional collaborations. A representative from the US embassy in Pretoria highlights that TechWomen epitomizes the US government’s commitment to empowering women through technology and innovation, positioning South Africa as a critical regional player.

The Ripple Effect of Skills and Insights

TechWomen’s impact goes beyond just skill acquisition. Aaliyah Vayez, a policy analyst, describes the programme as a strategic investment in human capital and innovation ecosystems. Those who participate don’t merely return with new skills; they bring back transformative ways of thinking and the determination to challenge the status quo.

“South African participants are not just beneficiaries; they are contributors to a shared future of innovation and equity,” Vayez affirms, underscoring the importance of continuous support and integration post-programme.

The TechWomen initiative stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and the potential of women to drive change in technology and beyond. As participants like Boodhram and her peers embark on their journeys to reshape their communities and industries, the ripple effects of their experiences will undoubtedly extend far and wide, sparking inspiration in future generations.
