Zipline is poised to significantly expand its medical drone delivery services in Africa through a groundbreaking agreement with the U.S. Department of State. Under this new model, the State Department will provide up to $150 million specifically for Zipline’s expansion, releasing funds only when governments formally commit to contracts and long-term logistics payments. Zipline boasts a track record of 1.8 million autonomous deliveries since its inception in 2016, with an impeccable safety record. The system offers health workers reliable, on-demand access to vital supplies, including blood, vaccines, and medicines. Independent studies have verified significant public health benefits derived from Zipline-supported health systems.

Some astounding metrics include a reduction in maternal deaths by up to 56% in facilities utilizing Zipline services. The incidence of stockouts for medicines and vaccines plummeted by 60%, while immunization rates improved dramatically—rising by as much as 37 percentage points. In many instances, medical deliveries that previously took over two weeks now arrive in less than 30 minutes.

According to Caitlin Burton, CEO of Zipline’s Africa operations, the investment by African governments underscores the success of Zipline’s model, addressing complex global health challenges like maternal mortality and under-5 mortality rates effectively and affordably.

Rwanda is set to be the first country to engage under this new funding model, having established a long-standing partnership with Zipline. Paula Ingabire, Rwanda’s Minister of ICT and Innovation, praised the efficiency brought forth by drone deliveries, noting their profound impact on saving time, costs, and ultimately, lives.

Muhammad Ali Pate, Nigeria’s Minister of Health and Social Welfare, highlighted the transformative effect of Zipline in underserved areas, stating that existing operations have already showcased how drone deliveries can eradicate stockouts and establish new service points, even where health facilities are lacking.

In Côte d’Ivoire, Minister Pierre Dimba acknowledged that Zipline’s service supports a more resilient health system, enhancing national health sovereignty while making clear gains in delivery times and healthcare facility performance.
