Canada Unveils 26-Player Roster for Women’s Baseball Development Camp in the USA – WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup 2026

Canada at the USA Baseball Women’s National Team Development Programme

Canada is set to make some exciting moves on the baseball field as it participates in the USA Baseball Women’s National Team Development Programme (WNTDP) from October 15 to 19, 2023. This highly anticipated event will take place at the National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina, providing a critical platform for female athletes to showcase their skills and refine their game.

Competitive Spirit and Opportunities

During this five-day camp, Canadian athletes will engage in a series of competitive matches against USA Baseball Development Teams. They will play four games in total, which includes two inter-squad contests that will allow them to gauge their performance against one another. An especially noteworthy feature of this event is the Prospect Development Pipeline (PDP) Testing Workout, designed to assess and enhance the athletes’ physical abilities. These opportunities are essential for athletes aiming to elevate their game in a high-performance environment.

Canada’s Roster Spotlight

Baseball Canada has announced an impressive 26-player roster for the upcoming camp, showcasing a mix of seasoned veterans and promising newcomers. Of these invitees, eleven athletes have previously worn the Canadian colors on the international stage, further enriching the team’s competitive edge. Among them are ten players who were instrumental in capturing the bronze medal at the WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup held in Thunder Bay, showcasing their talent on an international scale.

Notable players who have been selected include:

  • Lucie Anctil
  • Ela Day-Bédard
  • Alexane Fournier
  • Alizée Gélinas
  • Liz Gilder
  • Andréanne Leblanc
  • Cassie Matlock
  • Raine Padgham

This depth of experience will certainly lend itself to a more competitive atmosphere as the team prepares to face formidable opponents.

New Faces and Leadership

The coaching staff is equally impressive and noteworthy. Head Coach Anthony Pluta, who led Canada to a bronze medal finish in the 2024 WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup Finals, will helm the team. Adding to his expertise, Aaron Myette will return as pitching coach, while former Women’s National Team athlete Brittney Langlais joins the coaching ranks for her debut, alongside Kristy Watson and Logan Wedgewood. This diverse coaching team is expected to provide a wealth of knowledge and strategy, crucial for athlete development.

Emphasis on Development

What sets the WNTDP apart is its strong focus on development. The event is not merely about winning games; it also aims to cultivate the skills and potential of female athletes in baseball. The combination of competitive matches and workouts will enable players to hone their techniques, improve their physical conditioning, and work collaboratively with coaches who understand the intricacies of the game.

The kind of experience athletes gain in this program can be pivotal, positioning them for future opportunities at national and international tournaments. This initiative not only aims to strengthen the current roster but also to inspire the next generation of female baseball players in Canada.

The participation of Canada in the WNTDP underscores a commitment to advancing women’s baseball. With a robust roster, an experienced coaching staff, and a focus on skill development, the upcoming camp is poised to be a pivotal moment for the Canadian Women’s National Team.
