The gospel community is heartbroken as news emerges of the passing of Elder Goldwire McLendon, a beloved figure who gained recognition on Season 3 of BET’s “Sunday’s Best” in 2010. At 95 years old, McLendon was celebrated not just for his impressive talent, but for his dedication to his faith and community. Although the cause of death hasn’t been disclosed, tributes from fans and fellow musicians reiterate the profound impact he had on so many lives.
Participating in “Sunday’s Best” at the age of 79, McLendon was one of the oldest contestants to grace the platform. With his rousing performances, he quickly captured the hearts of the audience and judges alike. Although he ultimately finished as a finalist with Le’Andria Johnson taking home the title, many felt he was a winner in his own right, having inspired others through his remarkable journey at such an advanced age.
Notably, Elder McLendon caught the attention of industry titan Mathew Knowles, best known as the father of Beyoncé and Solange and the mastermind behind Destiny’s Child. In an inspiring turn of events, Knowles signed McLendon to a recording contract when he was 81 years old. This partnership further emphasized McLendon’s journey, underscoring the notion that it’s never too late to pursue one’s dreams. One heartwarming video featured him performing at the Potter’s House in Dallas, Texas, affirming his commitment to uplift and inspire through music.
A Philadelphia native, McLendon’s influence extended beyond gospel music, delving into genres such as jazz and continuously fostering a love for music within his family. Notably, his granddaughter, Samara Joy, is no stranger to accolades; she recently won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 2023 and boasts five Grammys overall, including two for Best Jazz Album. This musical lineage showcases the powerful legacy McLendon has forged through both his artistry and familial connections.
Just last Christmas, McLendon was still captivating audiences. His granddaughter shared a heartfelt post showcasing a performance, where she lovingly referred to him as “Pop Pop.” Her words, “it is well!! ❤️ our pop pop Elder Goldwire & the McLendon Family in Philly where it all began 🥹🙏🏽,” affixed a personal touch to his public persona, encapsulating the warmth and affection felt by many.
The McLendon family, united in their love for music, made it a goal to perform together whenever possible. In December 2023, Elder McLendon took the stage at the iconic Apollo Theater for a memorable performance with his children. The moment marked a milestone for the family, as they shared the stage for the first time, delivering a rendition of “It is Well!!” that left the audience moved to tears.
As the world mourns this tremendous loss, our thoughts and prayers are with the McLendon family, reflecting on a life well-lived and dedicated to uplifting others through the power of music.
