Kwanzaa Soul Stroll 2025: Grand Rapids Kicks Off 7-Day Treasure Hunt This Week

Celebrate Kwanzaa in Grand Rapids: A Community Invitation

The holiday season in Grand Rapids, MI, is set to take on a vibrant cultural flair with the West Michigan Jewels of Africa LLC (WMJOA LLC) hosting a Traditional African Drum and Dance Group event. The community is warmly invited to partake in the Kwanzaa Holiday Celebration kicking off on December 26. This annual celebration not only marks the significant cultural roots of the African American community but also fosters a spirit of unity, pride, and support for local Black-owned businesses.

The Soul Stroll Candle Lighting Ceremony

As part of the festivities, WMJOA LLC will present its third biannual “Soul Stroll Candle Lighting Ceremony.” This unique event serves as more than just a celebration; it embarks on a community treasure hunt aimed at promoting and supporting Black-owned businesses in the Grand Rapids area. The intersection of culture, commerce, and community makes for an enriching experience, encouraging participants to engage with their local economy meaningfully.

Event Details and Activities

Scheduled from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at 1541 Eastern Ave. SE, the event promises an exciting evening filled with live music, engaging displays, and libations. Attendees can look forward to the traditional lighting of the Kinara, a symbolic candleholder representing the seven principles of Kwanzaa. To warm up the evening, a hot drink bar will keep everyone cozy.

In a notable highlight, the “R you Smart? Kwanzaa Proclamation” will be unveiled, receiving recognition from Grand Rapids Mayor David LaGrand. This proclamation is a global call to action that reinforces the importance of the principles celebrated during Kwanzaa.

Understanding the Essence of Kwanzaa

Kwanzaa, introduced by Dr. Maulana Karenga in 1966, is a seven-day non-religious holiday that celebrates African American culture and heritage. As a time to reflect and reaffirm African roots, Kwanzaa instills pride and promotes access to buying Black—from goods to services.

Each of the seven days emphasizes a unique principle, fostering a deep connection with African heritage and community. This year, Grand Rapids will embody that spirit, giving everyone an opportunity to connect with and support Black culture and local enterprises.

The Kwanzaa Soul Stroll: A Community Treasure Hunt

The Kwanzaa Soul Stroll is designed as a community treasure hunt, guiding patrons through a range of Black-owned businesses located along the route between Wealthy Street SE and 36th Street. Participants can explore the diversity and richness of these establishments while supporting local entrepreneurs.

As the event unfolds, attendees are encouraged to visit as many businesses as possible. To participate in the treasure hunt, individuals must submit the total number of businesses visited by 6 p.m. on Wednesday, December 31, which coincides with the sixth day of Kwanzaa. Those taking part in the stroll become part of a larger cultural experience that reinforces communal support and economic empowerment.

Exciting Prizes and Community Spirit

The excitement doesn’t stop at exploration. Gifts, known as zawadi—the Swahili term for gifts—will be awarded to lucky winners of the treasure hunt. Importantly, participants need not be present to claim their gifts, ensuring that everyone can experience the joy of giving and receiving.

The “Grand Rapids Kwanzaa Soul Stroll 2025” festivities are hosted by a collaboration of community participants, including WMJOA, LLC, the African Drum and Dance Parent Association (ADDPA) of Flint, and the Kuungana African Drum and Dance Group in Flint. This collaboration underscores the unity and joint efforts of various local organizations in celebrating cultural heritage.

Reserve Your Spot for Free

Participation in this extraordinary event is free of charge! However, to ensure an organized and enjoyable experience, organizers encourage attendees to reserve a spot through Eventbrite. This step will help facilitate a smooth flow of attendees while ensuring everyone can enjoy the festivities without overcrowding.

As Grand Rapids prepares to celebrate Kwanzaa, the focus remains on community engagement, cultural pride, and local support. The Kwanzaa Holiday Celebration is not just an event; it is a movement to uplift and honor Black heritage through unity and commerce. Whether you’re a long-time resident or a visitor, this celebration invites all to join in and appreciate the rich tapestry of African American culture.
