Guwahati: The 15th Manipur International Polo Tournament 2025 kicked off with grandeur at Imphal’s historic Mapal Kangjeibung, the oldest polo ground in the world. This tournament is not just a series of matches; it’s a vibrant showcase of Manipur’s deep-rooted connection to the sport that it gifted to the world.

A Global Sporting Hub

Hosted by the Manipur Horse Riding and Polo Association (MHRPA), this year’s edition has attracted teams and polo enthusiasts from across continents, transforming the birthplace of polo into a global sporting hub for an entire week. From November 22 to November 27, teams from various nations will compete, culminating in the final match scheduled for November 29.

The atmosphere is electric as players and spectators gather to celebrate not just the sport, but the rich culture associated with it. The event promises to be a dazzling display of skill, tradition, and camaraderie among nations.

The Opening Ceremony

The tournament was inaugurated by Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel, who warmly welcomed the participating teams. In his opening address, he reflected on Manipur’s legacy as the home of Sagol Kangjei, the traditional game considered the precursor to modern polo. He emphasized the responsibility that the state carries in preserving the essence of polo while promoting international sporting relations.

Goel also highlighted the government’s commitment to nurturing the region’s heritage, sharing insights into various initiatives aimed at reviving the sport, from infrastructure development to collaborations with global experts.

The tournament commenced with a thrilling match where Colombia triumphed over the USA with a score of 6–4.
