Celebrating a Pioneer: Dr. Harvest Collier’s Reflections on an Academic Journey

In the vibrant landscape of academia, few stories are as compelling as that of Dr. Harvest Collier, a trailblazer in higher education. This October, the Curtis Laws Wilson Library at Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T) will host a significant event featuring Dr. Collier, who will share insights from his remarkable career as part of Archives Month.

A Legacy of Integration in Higher Education

On Tuesday, October 28, at 5:30 p.m., Dr. Collier will deliver a presentation titled “Reflections on the Academic Career of the First African-American Faculty at the University of Missouri-Rolla/Missouri S&T.” This talk promises to delve into the critical experiences surrounding faculty integration at the university.

Dr. Collier joined Missouri S&T in 1982 as a professor of chemistry, setting in motion a 30-year career marked by various leadership roles. His voice offers valuable perspectives on the challenges and triumphs of integrating a historically segregated institution.

A Rich Career at Missouri S&T

Throughout his tenure, Dr. Collier made significant contributions to both the Chemistry Department and the broader academic community. Serving as chair of chemistry from 1996 to 1999 and then as associate dean for the College of Arts and Sciences from 1999 to 2002, he demonstrated a commitment to fostering a welcoming environment for all students and faculty.

After transitioning to vice provost for undergraduate studies in 2007, Dr. Collier continued to influence and shape the educational experience until his retirement in 2012. His dedication and impact were recognized with the prestigious Chancellor Medal in 2014, a testament to his transformative role at the university.

Engaging the Public and Expanding Access

This enlightening presentation is free and open to the public, with campus parking available at no cost after 4:30 p.m. For those unable to attend in person, the talk will also be streamed on Zoom—registration is available at shsmo.org/calendar—and on Facebook Live at facebook.com/MissouriSandTArchives.

Engagement through digital platforms reflects a broader commitment to accessibility, ensuring that Dr. Collier’s reflections reach a diverse audience.

Honoring a Historic Anniversary
