Empowering Future Rodeo Stars: The Kestels’ Vision
A Global Pathway for Young Talent
Western Australia is witnessing a remarkable initiative that seeks to nurture the next generation of rodeo stars. Local rodeo enthusiasts Mark and Jo Kestel have embarked on a transformative journey, flying the brightest young cowboys and cowgirls across the globe to gain invaluable experience and training from the sport’s champions. This endeavor is part of their newly launched youth program, aimed at enhancing opportunities for talented riders in their pursuit of excellence.
A Legacy of Support
Mark and Jo Kestel, beloved figures in WA rodeo, have been instrumental in supporting junior riders for years, often providing financial backing out of their own pockets. Mark, who hails from the quaint Midwest town of Carnamah, discovered his passion for rodeo later in life. “I’ve been rodeoing most of my life, but I didn’t get onto my first bull until I was 28, so I was a bit of a late starter,” Mr. Kestel recalls. His late entry into the sport motivated him to create more avenues for youth, ensuring they have the early exposure and support he lacked.
The Double Barrel Entertainment Youth Rodeo Development Program
In August, the Kestels formalized their commitment with the launch of the Double Barrel Entertainment Youth Rodeo Development Program. This innovative initiative selects promising riders, providing them with the unique opportunity to train with world champions in the United States. In 2026, a select group of six talented athletes from WA will embark on this journey, mentored and supported by the Kestels along the way.
Evolving Training Techniques
Mark Kestel emphasizes the evolution of training methodologies in rodeo. “Back in the day, they used to have cowboy camps where young riders would live and train twice a week, but those days are long gone,” he reflects. Today’s approach incorporates diverse training schedules and more frequent practices, allowing for dynamic skill development. “WA has an incredible depth of talent in our junior cowboys and cowgirls, and my wife and I wanted to ensure they get every opportunity available to them.”
Rising Stars: Aja Tito
Among the emerging talents highlighted by the program is 14-year-old Aja Tito from Karratha. Aja has already made waves in the rodeo community, securing first place in breakaway roping—a timed event where a rider lassos a calf to stop the clock. Only two years into her rodeo journey, she also clinched the state title of All Around Cowgirl.
The Impact of Mentorship
Aja attributes her achievements to the mentorship she has received along the way, particularly during her recent training in the United States. “Being able to travel across the world has really been the best way to open up my eyes to what is possible,” she shares. During her time abroad, she trained under 23-time Women’s Professional Rodeo Association World Champion Jackie Crawford, gaining insights that she believes have been crucial to her success.
Insights Gained from Experts
“Working with Jackie, I got to understand how to change my swing and work my horse to a higher level,” Aja explains. Her tribute to Crawford’s expertise highlights the importance of learning from seasoned professionals. “Jackie is a legend of the sport, and the things I learned from her have helped me get to number one,” she adds, emphasizing the profound impact of quality mentorship in the competitive world of rodeo.
Looking Ahead
As Aja prepares for her next competition in Tamworth, where she will vie for titles in breakaway and Overall All Round Cowgirl, she is also looking forward to potentially returning to the US in 2027. The experiences provided by the Kestels have not only opened doors for her but have also propelled a sense of potential and aspiration among the youth involved in the program.
Through initiatives like the Double Barrel Entertainment Youth Rodeo Development Program, Mark and Jo Kestel are sowing the seeds for a vibrant future in rodeo, ensuring that the spirit of this exhilarating sport continues to thrive in Western Australia.
