USA Cricket Suspended by International Governing Body ICC

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has made a significant decision regarding USA Cricket, suspending its membership with immediate effect. This move, while severe, will not prevent the United States teams from competing in international events leading up to the much-anticipated 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

The suspension was approved after what the ICC described as “repeated and continued breaches” of obligations as a member under the ICC’s constitution. Key issues contributing to this decision include the failure to establish a functional governance structure and a clear lack of progress toward obtaining National Governing Body status from the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC).

Furthermore, the ICC highlighted concerns about “significant actions that have caused reputational damage to cricket in the United States and around the world,” although specific details were not disclosed. This suggests deeper issues within the management and representation of cricket in the country, casting a shadow over its potential growth and popularity.

Despite the suspension, the United States men’s cricket team will still compete in the upcoming T20 World Cup scheduled for February. During this time, the ICC will oversee the team management to ensure that the players are not adversely affected by the governance crisis. Remarkably, the U.S. team recently achieved a milestone by reaching the Super Eight stage at the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup, thereby qualifying for the subsequent 2026 tournament.

The ICC described the suspension as “unfortunate but necessary” to safeguard the long-term interests of the game in the U.S. They emphasized their commitment to ensuring that both the athletes and the sport itself remain protected during this tumultuous period.

It’s worth noting that USA Cricket had previously been placed “on notice” during the 2024 ICC annual general meeting for non-compliance with membership criteria. They were given a grace period of 12 months to implement essential changes to meet the ICC’s standards. The suspension indicates that those efforts were insufficient and that the situation has reached a critical point that necessitated immediate action from the global governing body of cricket.
