USA Luge Announces 2025-2026 U.S. Alpine Luge Team Roster
LAKE PLACID, N.Y. — Excitement is building in the world of luge as USA Luge reveals its roster for the 2025-2026 U.S. Alpine Luge Team. Among the six athletes making the cut, four hail from Marquette, Michigan, showcasing the region’s strong ties to the sport.
The Local Talent
The Marquette connection is highlighted by Torrey Cookman, Katie Cookman, Thomas Matthews, and McKenna Wnuk. Their inclusion in this elite team not only reflects their talent and commitment but also serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes in the area.
- Torrey Cookman, 21, has been a dedicated member of the National Team for an impressive nine years. Currently a senior at Western Michigan University, Torrey brings a wealth of experience and passion to the team.
- Katie Cookman, 18, is no stranger to success. With six years of experience on the National Team and a current ranking of tenth in World Cup standings, Katie is already making waves as a freshman at Central Michigan University.
- Thomas Matthews, 16, is entering his third year on the National Team and continues to develop his skills and competitive edge. His youth, combined with his determination, makes him a promising athlete to watch in the coming seasons.
- McKenna Wnuk, 21, although the newest member from Lapeer, downstate, attends Northern Michigan University and contributes to the team’s dynamic with fresh perspectives and energy.
Training Grounds and Competitive Schedule
The athletes will embark on extensive training trips to Austria and Italy, crucial for honing their skills in preparation for the competitive season ahead. From early December through February, they’ll participate in various Alpine Luge World Cup competitions, which will include General Class races for athletes aged 21 and up, as well as Junior World Cup races for those under 20.
Alpine Luge, known previously as natural track luge, is distinct for being contested on tracks lacking banked turns, requiring athletes to use their entire bodies to navigate their sleds along packed ice and snow. This discipline highlights not only speed but also skill, balance, and strategic maneuvering.
The Training Facilities
The U.S. Alpine Luge Team trains at the Upper Peninsula Luge Club natural track at Lucy Hill, located in Negaunee, Michigan. This track spans half a mile with a 280-foot drop and stands out as one of only four luge tracks nationwide, particularly as the only full-length flat natural track in the country.
This state-of-the-art facility provides the athletes with the perfect venue to refine their techniques and push their limits in a safe environment.
Insights from the Coaching Staff
U.S. Alpine Luge Coach Keith Whitman, who resides in Escanaba, expressed his enthusiasm for the team. “Once again we are fielding an excellent group of men and women, some of whom have placed near the top in international competition,” he stated. His confidence in the athletes underscores the hard work and determination they embody as they prepare for the season ahead.
