The high-pressure system over the Northern Adriatic, particularly the Gulf of Trieste, left no options for the 2025 Melges 24 World Championship today, as Day 4 concluded without any racing.
The decision, made by PRO Giancarlo Crevatin around 4:00 PM, maintains the total number of races at three. Consequently, the final results and any potential rankings are now postponed to the fifth and final day, which will culminate in the awards ceremony for the twenty-sixth World Champion of this premier one-design class.
This situation persists even if tomorrow brings no racing. Following discussions this morning, the board of the International Melges 24 Class Association voted to approve a proposal from the Race Committee and International Jury to reduce the required races for a World title from five to three.
As tomorrow approaches, both sailors and volunteers are eagerly tracking weather forecasts from various online sources. While the outlook remains uncertain, conditions appear slightly more favorable for the morning.
At present, Geoff Fargo’s Sentinel (USA) leads the standings, sharing points with Michele Paoletti’s Strambapapà (ITA). Close behind are Cuyler Morris’s Dark Horse (USA) and Peter McClennen’s Gamecock (USA), helmed with tactical expertise from Jeremy Wilmot. As Wilmot remarked, “The World Championship starts tomorrow, and everything could be decided in a single day: it’s best to be ready.”
In the Corinthian division, two-time World Champions Mataran 24 (CRO, Ante Botica / Ivo Matic) continue to hold the lead, currently sitting seventh overall. They are just ahead of the Zhik Race Team (GBR, Geoff Carveth / Miles Quinton), while Antonio Masoli’s Vertigo (ITA) occupies the third spot among the Corinthians, ranked thirteenth overall.
The only chance for racing lies in an early start scheduled for Saturday morning at 8:15 am.
Racing fans can follow the event live, as streaming coverage is available on the social media channels of Yacht Club Adriaco and the International Melges 24 Class Association. The coverage includes commentary by journalist Andrea Falcon and technical insights from Mauro Melandri. Additionally, live tracking will be facilitated by Meta Sail.
The 2025 Melges 24 World Championship, hosted by Yacht Club Adriaco in conjunction with the International Melges 24 Class Association and supported by the Italian Melges 24 Class, is made possible through the contributions of several sponsors, including the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, Municipality of Trieste, and various other partners.
