Living a Dream: Jayda Fulp’s Journey in Judo

At just 18 years old, Jayda Fulp is not just a rising star in the world of Judo; she’s a beacon of determination and talent. A pre-med student at Texas Christian University (TCU), her sunny disposition and vibrant personality mask the fierce competitor that emerges the moment she steps onto the Judo mat.

“When you meet her, you’re almost blinded by her megawatt smile,” remarked Fulp’s mother, Allie. “But on the mat? She becomes a totally different person. I remember being that mom who would encourage her to push through pain, so I think it made her tough.” This tender yet tough love has been instrumental in shaping the champion Fulp is becoming.

The Early Days of Judo

Fulp’s journey to becoming a Judo powerhouse began at the age of 9. Reflecting on her early sports experiences, she said, “I wanted to do a sport. I tried track initially, but it just wasn’t for me. My grandpa introduced me to Judo, and it changed everything.” With a passion ignited, Fulp immersed herself in the world of martial arts, finding a sense of purpose and belonging.

“I first met Jayda when she was just 10 years old,” said Carrie Chandler, a coach for the USA Judo National Team. “She was shy but showed a lot of respect and humility. As soon as she started training, it was clear she had a natural talent.” This blend of innate ability and dedicated training has propelled Fulp to remarkable heights in her young career.

A Landmark Achievement

Now, Fulp stands on the cusp of her next big challenge, having earned a spot on the USA Judo team. As she prepares to compete in the Judo Junior World Championships in Lima, Peru, she describes it as “a big one,” emphasizing the gravity of this opportunity. “It’s my first major national title that I’m aiming for.”

Chandler spoke highly of Fulp’s grit and mindset, noting, “She’s not afraid to win. The lights, the pressure—they don’t faze her. She fights through it, and that’s one of her greatest qualities as an athlete.” This fearless attitude is critical as she faces the top competitors in her sport.

Rising Through the Ranks

This year has been monumental for Fulp as she shifted into one of the most challenging weight classes in Judo, the -78 kg category. “This is really a year for her growth,” Chandler explained. “She’s only been in this weight category for less than a year, but during that time, she’s clinched four national titles and two international gold medals. Just recently, she returned from Taipei with a bronze medal. I have to admit, she’s exceeding everyone’s expectations, including my own.”

As she gears up for the Lima World Championships, the atmosphere is electric. Fulp admits, “Honestly, I wouldn’t know what to do if I won. I’d probably bawl my eyes out!” This combination of vulnerability and ambition paints a picture of a young athlete who is both relatable and relatable, facing immense challenges with an open heart.

Fulp’s journey is a testament to hard work, dedication, and the influence of supportive mentors and family. As she embarks on this next adventure, the Judo community and fans alike are rooting for her to achieve her dreams, one match at a time.
