HBCU Spirit Shines in Nike’s Latest Yardrunners 6.0 Collection

Nike is igniting a wave of school spirit this homecoming season with its ongoing commitment to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). With the Yardrunners initiative, Nike is gracing the sneaker scene with a lineup designed specifically to celebrate the unique heritage and culture of select HBCUs, ensuring that the pride and joy of these institutions shine brightly during tailgates and beyond.

In its sixth year of the Yardrunners initiative, Nike’s latest collection features Air Max 95s inspired by the rich history, colors, and identities of four renowned HBCUs: Florida A&M University, Spelman College, Morehouse College, and Norfolk State University. Each shoe not only reflects the aesthetic of the respective institution but also incorporates elements that resonate with the legacy of its community members.

The Yardrunners initiative was born in 2020, thanks to the passion and vision of Nike employees who are proud HBCU alumni. The primary goal behind this initiative is to honor the creativity, community, and cultural depth that thrive on HBCU campuses. Nike’s approach is rooted in collaboration—partnering with trailblazers and creatives from these institutions to create not just shoes, but stories that inspire and empower.

This year’s collection shines a spotlight on the individuals who embody the spirit of HBCUs, from current students and alumni to dedicated faculty members. Through these designs, the heart and soul of each school’s community are vibrantly celebrated.

The Florida A&M Air Max 95 is a stunning representation of its school colors, wrapped in bold orange and green leather with a touch of snake print to nod to the Rattler mascot. The shoe features the iconic chant “Strike, strike, and strike again,” a phrase that resonates deeply with FAMU students. Among the figures highlighted in this campaign are DungeonFord founder David Castro, the esteemed Director of Bands Dr. Shelby Chipman, SGA President Zayla Bryant, and accomplished track star Arayana Ladson.

Shifting to the elegant realm of Spelman College, the design of their Air Max 95 embraces a sophisticated aesthetic. With blue and white layers embellished in leather and suede, the shoe features a striking jaguar print—a tribute to the school’s mascot. Delicately inscribed across the upper is the phrase “Thy Name We Praise,” a poignant nod to Spelman’s rich legacy. Featured in this campaign are captivating Spelmanites like flag football captain Olivia Brown, revered music professor Dr. Joyce Johnson, Women in Hip Hop Collective founder Eboni Ellis, and the remarkable Kamora Freeland, a standout individual celebrated for being the youngest Black female pilot in the country.

Morehouse College’s edition is a display of robust confidence, featuring a blend of black and maroon tones across leather and suede layers. With a tiger-inspired print and the school’s motto, “Et Facta Est Lux” (“And There Was Light”), elegantly placed along the shoe, it resonates deeply with the Morehouse spirit. This campaign brings forth key figures such as Dr. Brock Mayers, Dean of Students; Keshawn Wiley III, recognized as the school’s 2025 Entrepreneur of the Year; javelin thrower Rodney Gross; and the Moody family, highlighting two generations of Morehouse men.
