The warmth of community was palpable this past December 20, at the Bartow Community Center in Co-op City, where the Coalition of African American Churches and Community Organizations hosted its 29th Annual Pre-Kwanzaa celebration. This highly anticipated event welcomed locals to bond over art, culture, and history in a festive atmosphere brimming with joy and a rich sense of togetherness.

Pre-Kwanzaa Celebration

A Partnership for the People

This year’s Pre-Kwanzaa celebration was co-organized with the Office of Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson. A significant figure in the Bronx community, Gibson has consistently championed initiatives that uplift and empower local residents. Attendees could see her passionate commitment to cultural festivities on display as she mingled with guests, reveling in the joy and excitement surrounding the occasion.

A Feast for the Senses

The celebration featured an array of vendors, games, and cultural activities, ensuring that there was something for everyone. Attendees enjoyed a Karamu feast, an integral part of Kwanzaa celebrations that emphasizes community sharing and reflection. Food stalls presented mouthwatering traditional dishes, enabling community members to engage in culinary exchanges that celebrate African heritage.

Cultural Richness and Artistic Performances

At the heart of the event was a lively Griot ceremony, showcasing various artistic performances that included music, poetry readings, and storytelling. A standout performance was presented by the Latrell Antonetty Band, who beautifully rendered “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” widely recognized as the Black National Anthem. This performance served not only as a musical highlight but also as a powerful remembrance of African American history and resilience.

Honoring Community Leaders

Walking through the venue felt like navigating through a tapestry of memories and shared achievements. Several distinguished community members were recognized for their invaluable contributions to local culture and leadership. Honorees included Helen G. Atkins, Kenneth Nelson, Taiwo Ifesanya, and Kaba Hiawatha Kamene. Their recognition reflects the celebration’s focus on honoring wisdom, cultural leadership, and commitment to community involvement.
