Spotlight on Emerson Theater Collaborative’s Black Irish
In the heart of Sedona, Arizona, history and culture intertwine as the Emerson Theater Collaborative (ETC) presents Black Irish, a one-act play by the talented Jeffrey Kagan-McCann. Scheduled for performances from February 6 to 8, 2026, at Sedona United Methodist Church in The New Room, this poignant production explores themes of identity, family, and the search for belonging.
The Storyline
Black Irish tells the compelling journey of Ruairí Phelan, a young African-American man who travels to a quaint Irish farming town in pursuit of his roots. Seeking the truth about his grandfather’s family, Ruairí uncovers layers of history and emotion, particularly the story of Uncle Patrick, who has been presumed dead for decades, unbeknownst to his family. The narrative skillfully balances humor with poignant moments, creating a rich tapestry that resonates with audiences.
Critics have hailed the script; The Seattle Times described it as “as intoxicating as a slug of good whiskey.” Its accolades include winning the Best Play award at the 2019 Hartford Fringe Festival, affirming its status as both a critical and audience favorite.
