Honoring Veterans: The Mission of AboutFace-USA
A Legacy of Service
For over a decade, Joe LaBranche has been a pivotal leader at AboutFace-USA, a nonprofit organization founded by veterans to support and uplift fellow service members. Located in Cumming, Georgia, AboutFace-USA focuses on healing veterans, fortifying families, and fostering community ties. Under Joe’s guidance, the organization has not only broadened its outreach but also developed innovative programs designed to enhance the well-being of veterans and their families.
The Launch of AboutFace Farm
In 2024, AboutFace expanded its horizons further with the introduction of AboutFace Farm, an aeroponic facility dedicated to growing fresh produce and nutrient-rich microgreens. This initiative not only emphasizes whole health wellness but also provides veterans with meaningful employment opportunities. It represents a blend of sustainability and personal growth, creating a space where veterans can cultivate both crops and community connections.
Transitioning Leadership
With Carol LaBranche stepping into the role of Executive Director, a new chapter begins for AboutFace-USA. Carol, who holds a Master of Public Administration from the University of North Georgia, has long been instrumental in the organization’s mission. She previously served as the president of the VFW Auxiliary Post 9143 and contributed significantly to the Veteran Resource and Community Center, demonstrating her commitment and understanding of veterans’ issues.
Carol’s Vision and Community Engagement
Carol’s leadership brings a fresh perspective grounded in empathy and a deep understanding of the mental and behavioral health challenges veterans face. Drawing from personal experiences and ongoing education in trauma-informed care practices, she is set to enhance community involvement and develop a coalition to address pressing issues such as veteran suicide and homelessness.
Joe LaBranche continues to play a significant role, focusing on expanding AboutFace Farm’s reach and mentoring veterans in the program. Together, they are committed to not only improving the lives of veterans but also re-establishing their sense of purpose and belonging.
Veteran Resource and Community Center
The establishment of the Veteran Resource and Community Center in 2023 marked a significant milestone for AboutFace-USA. This center has become a sanctuary for thousands of veterans and their families, offering a plethora of services. Highlights include guidance on VA benefits, transportation to healthcare appointments, and mental health support through veteran-led groups.
Many veterans have expressed that these services have been life-changing, instilling hope and a renewed sense of belonging. The center is a testament to the community’s collective effort to support those who have served.
Funding and Support
The growth and success of AboutFace-USA have been buoyed by a substantial $1.2 million grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) in 2023. This vital funding has allowed the organization to enhance its programs and services. Ongoing support from local businesses, corporate sponsors, and individual donors ensures that AboutFace-USA can continue its mission of giving back to veterans in need.
Call to Action
Carol LaBranche’s vision for the organization extends beyond immediate needs. She emphasizes the importance of raising awareness around mental health and improving access to healthcare for veterans. “Our veterans have given us so much, and AboutFace-USA exists to give back in every way we can,” she states, inviting supportive partners to join their mission.
Upcoming Community Celebration
Looking ahead, AboutFace-USA is gearing up for its annual Veteran’s Day Celebration: Salute to Service. Scheduled for November 11, 2025, this event will feature a reception, keynotes from notable guests like Georgia State Representative Todd Jones, and the live drawing for the inaugural Patriot Prizes Raffle. This celebration serves as both an avenue to honor veterans and a means to sustain the nonprofit’s impactful services.
