Acre’s Vibrant Coffee Culture Takes Center Stage at SIC
Acre, a state renowned for its rich biodiversity and vibrant culture, is stepping into the spotlight during one of Brazil’s most significant coffee gatherings: the International Coffee Week (SIC). Scheduled from September 5th to 7th in Belo Horizonte (MG), this event promises to offer an insight into the burgeoning coffee industry in Brazil, with a special focus on sustainability and innovation.
Spotlight on Jorge Souza: A Sustainable Pioneer
Among the distinguished speakers is Jorge Souza, a dedicated coffee producer from Acre, who has made waves in the industry with his specialty coffee brand, Forest Roots. Souza’s expertise in sustainable farming practices, developed in the lush surroundings of the Chico Mendes Reserve, will provide attendees with valuable lessons on how coffee production can harmoniously coexist with environmental preservation.
The Essence of Jorge’s Talk
With the compelling theme “Coffee and Bioeconomy: New Ways to Generate Value with Sustainability,” Jorge’s talk is set for Thursday, September 6th. He aims to demonstrate how incorporating sustainable practices into coffee farming can support both economic viability and environmental responsibility. “When I decided that I wanted to work with coffee, I started studying. Our work has been consolidated every year. In our first harvest, we were able to export to the United States and China,” he shares, highlighting a significant achievement in his journey.
A Journey Rooted in Sustainability
The quest for sustainable coffee farming began for Jorge and his wife in 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic. They ventured into growing specialty coffee, committing to plant one hectare per year while rejuvenating degraded areas. This hands-on approach not only emphasizes the importance of environmental responsibility but also uplifts local communities, merging tradition with innovation.
The Impact of Participation in SIC
Jorge views his participation in SIC as an invaluable opportunity to showcase Acre’s unique approach to coffee production. “With the talk at SIC, I hope to inspire people inside and outside the country, showing that it is possible to produce with quality, without compromising care for the environment,” he emphasizes. With his passion for his home state, Jorge reflects on the pride he feels in promoting his brand and legacy, one that he hopes will influence future generations.
A Growing Recognition for Acre’s Coffee
Acre is increasingly making its mark on the national coffee scene, where its producers are recognized for their dedication to quality and sustainability. The State Department of Agriculture (Seagri) is keen on enhancing the visibility of Acre’s coffee farmers. A partnership with the Brazilian Micro and Small Business Support Service (Sebrae) has been established to bolster local producers’ presence at events like SIC, further promoting their commitment to sustainable practices.
SIC: A Hub for Learning and Networking
The International Coffee Week promises a rich array of activities, including lectures, workshops, and quality competitions, tailored to showcase the diversity and potential of Brazilian coffee farming. Attendees will have the chance to engage in discussions on sustainability, technology, and strategies for enhancing Brazil’s coffee products. Jorge notes, “In 2024, we had the pleasure of participating in SIC as well and were among the 20 best cafes in Brazil. I hope this year to learn even more and engage with others passionate about this wonderful culture.”
Embracing a Bright Future
As the coffee community gathers at SIC, it will not only serve as a platform for education and collaboration but also as a celebration of a unique blend of tradition and sustainable innovation spearheaded by passionate individuals like Jorge Souza. With his heartfelt dedication to coffee and the environment, he stands as a beacon of inspiration for producers in Acre and beyond.
