Uncovering the Past: Ground Penetrating Radar to Reveal Gravesites at Zion Hill CME Cemetery

The historic Zion Hill CME Cemetery in Cordova, once the final resting place for African American community members, is set to be mapped using ground penetrating radar (GPR) technology. This innovative approach aims to uncover the locations of dozens of unmarked graves that have remained hidden for decades.
On a recent Friday, crews from the University of Memphis conducted initial surveys of the cemetery, a site that has been in use from 1908 to 1982. The cemetery served members of the Zion Hill CME Church, which once stood nearby, creating a storied connection between the land and its community. Presently, the church has relocated to Dexter Road, but the legacy of the original congregation remains vital.
The project is not just about uncovering graves; it’s about restoring dignity and respect to those who are laid to rest in this sacred ground. Carrie Louise Pinson, a passionate advocate for preserving the cemetery, leads this effort. “This should not happen. You should not just wipe people off the earth as if they have never lived,” she asserts, emphasizing the importance of remembering and honoring the departed.
Pinson estimates that there are at least 70 graves in the cemetery, although she believes there may be many more. The GPR technology will play a crucial role in identifying these gravesites, allowing the community to reconnect with their heritage and bring closure to families with ties to those buried there.
In conversations with older residents of the Bridgewater neighborhood, legends emerge of the church burning down at some point in history. Pinson notes that the cemetery has been relatively neglected over the years, yet it holds significant cultural and historical value. This revitalization project aims to shed light on those stories and bring them back into public consciousness.
