Can Society Handle Another ‘Scary Movie’? Regina Hall Weighs In After Filming ‘Scary Movie 6’

The Return of “Scary Movie”: Navigating Humor in a Changing Landscape

In an era dominated by cancel culture and the ever-present gaze of social media, the “Scary Movie” franchise faces a critical question: will its traditionally controversial jokes still resonate with audiences? This concern has been top of mind for actress Regina Hall, who reprises her role as Brenda in the upcoming “Scary Movie 6.” Before signing on, Hall reflected on the evolution of comedy and the shifting boundaries of acceptable humor.

In a candid interview with Entertainment Weekly, Hall expressed her apprehensions: “I think comedy and maybe the limits that you can push have changed.” She further pondered if the original “Scary Movie” could even be made today, asking rhetorically, “Can we hack this man? Can we have balls coming out? Can we have a d— in an ear?” The humor that defined the late ‘90s and early 2000s now invites scrutiny, as shifts in societal norms complicate the formula for successful comedy.

Fortunately for Hall and fans of the franchise, “Scary Movie 6” involves a reunion of some original cast members along with the return of the Wayans brothers. Known for their pivotal roles in creating the series, Keenen Ivory Wayans, Marlon Wayans, and Shawn Wayans have returned to write and produce the latest installment. Hall noted this return had a significant impact on the project: “When I heard about it, I was like, ‘Oh, wow.’ And then when I read it, I was like, ‘Oh, boy, the Wayans are back. They’ve done it again.’ [It’s] the only way [the reboot] works.”

Reflecting on her character, Brenda, Hall reveals, “She’s still crazy,” and emphasizes the enduring bond between Brenda and Cindy, played by Anna Faris. This return to comedic roots has proven to be revitalizing for Hall, who recently appeared in “One Battle After Another.” She expressed her enthusiasm for the brand of humor unique to “Scary Movie”: “I’m really excited to do that kind of humor again. There’s a very specific type of broad humor that’s in Scary Movie.” Her appreciation for the ongoing interest in the franchise, even after 25 years, adds a heartfelt layer to her perspective.

As anticipation builds, “Scary Movie 6” is set to hit theaters on June 12, 2026. With a blend of nostalgia and contemporary humor trying to find its footing in a changed comedic landscape, fans are left eager to see how Hall and the team tackle this new chapter in the franchise.
