Celebrating a Milestone: Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s 2025-26 Season Launch
The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (AAADT) has officially kicked off its milestone 2025-26 season, ushering in a wave of excitement and artistic brilliance. This year’s season launch was amplified by the presence of two distinguished artists: Colman Domingo, a two-time Oscar nominee, as Honorary Chair, and global superstar Ciara as the Honored Guest. Their involvement set a vibrant tone for the gala, held on December 3 at the iconic New York City Center.
A Night to Remember
The evening commenced with a glittering opening night gala, marking not just the beginning of a new season but also a significant moment in the company’s rich history. Artistic Director Alicia Graf Mack took the stage, emphasizing the enduring legacy of Alvin Ailey, the visionary founder of the company. “Tonight marks more than an opening night,” she reflected, noting that it is a continuation of Ailey’s dream that began 67 years ago. Graf Mack articulated her commitment to sharing authentic identities and diverse movement languages that resonate deeply with audiences.
Honoring a Legacy
Stepping into her role following the passing of the legendary Judith Jamison—who served as Artistic Director Emerita—Graf Mack expressed the profound impact Jamison has had on her journey. “I have been staring at images of Judith Jamison since I was a child. She has always been my North Star,” Graf Mack explained, underscoring the challenge and honor of following in her footsteps. Jamison’s influential leadership shaped not only AAADT but also the global perception of dance as a powerful art form.
The Gala’s Highlights
The gala celebrated not only the artistic vision of AAADT but also honored Daria L. Wallach, chair of the AILEY Board of Trustees, for her unwavering dedication to the organization. The evening featured a stunning performance by the company’s dancers, who showcased a blend of athleticism and emotional expression. Their movements told powerful stories rooted in Black history and spirituality, embodying joy in every step.
Ciara took to the stage to introduce the evening’s emotional finale, “Revelations,” Ailey’s groundbreaking masterpiece. Accompanied by a live choir, the performance was a celebration of Ailey’s artistry and the true spirit of the gala. Other highlights included the company’s premiere of Mehdi Walerski’s “Blink of an Eye,” enriched by the artistry of Grammy-winning violinist Melissa White, and a new production of Judith Jamison’s “A Case of You,” performed with warmth by five-time Grammy winner Samara Joy.
Fundraising Success
Following the breathtaking performances, guests continued the celebrations at the Ziegfeld Ballroom, mingling among luminaries from entertainment, philanthropy, business, and politics. The gala successfully raised over $2.7 million, funding new artistic creations, scholarships for The Ailey School, and educational initiatives aimed at introducing young people to dance as an empowering form of expression.
A Busy Season Ahead
The gala was not only a celebratory event but also the launchpad for AILEY’s five-week holiday engagement at New York City Center. This series features world premieres from choreographers Maija Garcia, Jamar Roberts, Frederick Earl Mosley, and Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, along with beloved classics like “Revelations.” Following its New York run, AAADT will embark on a national tour, spanning over 20 cities, including Washington, DC, Atlanta, Los Angeles, and Chicago, from January to May 2026.
A Message of Inspiration
In a spirited post on Instagram after the gala, Graf Mack encouraged continuing the momentum generated by the evening. “Let’s keep this energy going,” she wrote, expressing gratitude for the support and enthusiasm of the AAADT family. Her message encapsulated the essence of what Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater represents—a community united by artistry, advocacy, and the transformative power of dance.
The 2025-26 season promises to be a remarkable chapter for AAADT, blending tradition with innovation and driving the legacy of Alvin Ailey forward into the future.
