Commemorate MLK Day in Fort Wayne, Indiana

The Fight for Civil Rights in Fort Wayne: A Historical Perspective

Throughout the 1960s, Fort Wayne was a crucible of civil rights activism. The NAACP Youth bravely marched outside the Northcrest shopping center, protesting the refusal to hire African Americans. Similarly, the Ministerial Alliance organized boycotts and peaceful walks along Calhoun Street to challenge the segregation in Fort Wayne Community Schools. Other activists demonstrated outside the Allen County Courthouse, shining a light on the injustices faced by minorities in the community.

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘what are you doing for others?’” – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

In the spirit of this powerful quote, we are encouraged to reflect on our roles in our communities and commit to making a positive impact. As we approach Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, it’s a perfect opportunity to immerse ourselves in the community and honor his legacy.
