The Rise of Podravina: Croatia’s Herbal Haven
A Fertile Ground for Medicinal Herbs
Podravina, located in northern Croatia, has emerged as a significant hub for cultivating and processing medicinal herbs. The region’s favorable climate and rich soil contribute to the growth of nearly 200 different medicinal plants. With increasing production rates and a robust export market, Podravina is not just a local treasure; it’s gaining international acclaim.
A Scented Bounty
At a massive processing facility in Pitomača, the rich scents of the diverse herbs waft through the air. This facility has achieved an impressive annual production of 60 million tea bags, primarily directed towards export markets. With shipments reaching countries like Japan, the entirety of the European Union, and even as far as the Americas, it’s clear that Podravina’s herbal products are in high demand.
Denis Nemčević, President of the Management Board of the Spider Group, highlights the extensive reach of their exports. “We supply Japan, the entire EU, neighboring countries, America, Mexico, and beyond,” he shares, jokingly noting that perhaps only Antarctica is left unexplored as a market.
Chamomile: The Heart of Production
Among the various herbs cultivated, chamomile stands out as the most important. Over half of the region’s production consists of this prized herb. High-quality chamomile is essential for the production of chamomile tea, a popular beverage globally. Josip Ivanec, Production Director at Spider Group, explains how their drying process is meticulously controlled to preserve the essential oils and enhance quality, making their chamomile highly sought after.
Long-Standing Partnerships
The superior quality of Podravina’s chamomile has fostered enduring relationships with international buyers, some of whom have been sourcing teas from the region for over two decades. Elvis Sefo, director of a Sarajevo-based company, praises the chamomile for its richness in essential oils, making it a staple for his business, along with other ingredients like rosehip.
Brewing Up Knowledge
For those curious about tea’s journey from plant to cup, a visit to the ‘House of Tea – Oasis of Peace’ in Špišić Bukovica offers an enlightening experience. This center showcases the medicinal plants native to the Mura–Drava–Danube Regional Park. With six themed tasting rooms dedicated to different herbs like dandelion and mint, it’s an engaging way to learn about their health benefits and cultural significance.
A Cup a Day
Croatia may be known for its coffee culture, but the House of Tea is on a mission to encourage tea consumption. “We promote enjoying at least one cup of tea a day,” says Veronika Živko from the House of Tea. With calming options like chamomile and mint, every tea offers unique benefits, presenting a delightful alternative for locals and visitors alike.
