Lauryn Hill Shares Touching Tribute to Fugees Producer John Forté

Lauryn Hill recently paid homage to her late friend and collaborator, John Forté, a vital figure in hip-hop who passed away at the age of 50. Known for his role as a producer, songwriter, and a long-time member of the Fugees family, Forté’s influence and artistry marked a pivotal moment in the genre’s history.

Hill’s heartfelt tribute was shared on Instagram, where she reminisced about their enduring friendship that blossomed during their early days in New York City. In her post, she reflected, “I can’t remember the exact moment I met John Forte or Forte as we used to call him, but I know we became fast friends very soon after. I loved him, my family loved him.” This sentiment encapsulates the essence of their bond—a connection that thrived amidst the pulse of a transformative musical era.

The nostalgia resonated throughout Hill’s words as she recalled their youthful exploration of the city’s vibrant streets. Describing the 90s hip-hop scene, she painted a picture of excitement and potential: a time when everything felt within reach. “Forte was a gentleman and a scholar with a strong pen, deep soul, and kind heart,” Hill wrote, emphasizing Forté’s unique voice and perspective that combined elements of his Brownsville roots and a prep-school background.

In her tribute, Hill reminisced about her role in introducing Forté to Wyclef Jean and Pras, which ultimately paved the way for his contributions to the Fugees’ iconic 1996 album, “The Score.” Tracks like “Cowboys,” “Family Business,” and the bonus single “Fu-Gee-La” are just some of the remarkable pieces of their collaboration. “Soon after he’d become part of the crew (Refugee Camp to be exact) and part of the music the Fugees were creating,” Hill noted, emphasizing their shared experiences and the joy of those moments.

Hill vividly captured the essence of that particular summer in New York City: “We were all inseparable that summer, music and fashion connoisseurs, outside—figuring out the best ways to communicate our particular consciousnesses within that musical landscape.” This sense of unity among the artists highlights the spirit of collaboration that characterized the era.

As life often does, it took them on different paths, yet Forté’s return during the recent Mised-Fugees Tour seemed to defy the passage of time. Hill remarked, “He stepped on stage like no time had passed at all,” a testament to the enduring bonds of friendship and shared passion for music. While their lives diverged, their connection remained strong, further underscoring the impact Forté had on those around him.

As Hill expressed her sorrow, she revealed that she had been in contact with Forté just weeks prior to his untimely passing. “This loss is unexpected and surreal, and my heart aches… for his family, for his wife, for his children, for his friends, and for all of us who were blessed to know him,” she shared, signaling the depth of her grief. Her final words conveyed a profound affection: “I love you, John. Rest in peace, gentle King.”

Other members of the Fugees also joined in honoring Forté. Shortly after the news of his death surfaced, Wyclef Jean shared a poignant video of the two performing together, proclaiming, “This one hurts. My brother @john_forte has joined the Angels. Legends never die, look at the smile. RIP my Refugee brother.” This chorus of tributes exemplifies the impact Forté had not only as a musician but also as a beloved friend and collaborator.

Forté leaves behind his wife, Laura Fuller, and two young children, Wren and Hale, who will carry on his legacy in their own way. The outpouring of love and memories shared in the wake of his passing serves as a reminder of the profound impact he had in the realms of music and personal relationships.
