MacKenzie Scott Grants $50 Million to Winston-Salem State University

MacKenzie Scott continues her remarkable philanthropic journey, and this time, Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) is the fortunate recipient of a transformative $50 million gift. This recent donation not only underscores Scott’s commitment to education but also marks her second substantial contribution to this North Carolina historically black college and university (HBCU), surpassing her initial donation of $30 million in 2020. With this latest infusion, her total contribution to WSSU has now reached a staggering $80 million, ranking among the largest single gifts in the university’s 133-year history.

Chancellor Bonita J. Brown of WSSU expressed profound gratitude, stating, “This gift is truly life-changing for our students and our community.” In a press release, she highlighted the far-reaching impact of Scott’s generosity, emphasizing that it enables the institution to transform lives not only in the present but also for future generations. Such sentiments echo the widespread acknowledgment of Scott’s philanthropic philosophy—one rooted in empowering communities and fostering educational opportunities.

The first $30 million gift Scott made to WSSU in 2020 played a crucial role in reshaping the university’s financial landscape. The funds were strategically invested in the university’s endowment, allowing WSSU to enhance student access, fuel scholarship opportunities, and solidify its long-term financial sustainability. Beyond these investments, a portion of the funds was allocated to expand WSSU’s real estate footprint, addressing the challenges faced by a land-locked campus grappling with record demand for its programs.

With the recent $50 million donation, WSSU’s leadership is actively crafting a comprehensive plan aimed at prioritizing student success and ensuring a lasting impact on the community. Chancellor Brown elaborated, saying, “Her investment empowers us to make a high-quality education accessible, affordable, and within reach for students who never believed college was possible.” This statement encapsulates the core mission of WSSU and reflects the philanthropic spirit Scott embodies in supporting educational institutions.

WSSU is not alone in benefiting from Scott’s transformative approach to philanthropy. Over the years, she has pledged record amounts to various historically black colleges and universities, as well as organizations dedicated to uplifting underserved communities. In 2023 alone, her contributions include $70 million to the United Negro College Fund (UNCF), $42 million to Alcorn State University, and $63 million to Morgan State University. Other notable donations include $50 million to Virginia State University, $38 million to Alabama State University, $80 million to Howard University, and $38 million to Spelman College. Remarkably, on the same day WSSU received its gift, Scott also announced a $50 million donation to Norfolk State University, highlighting her relentless commitment to supporting HBCUs.
