Mustard Attributes 120-Pound Weight Loss to Tennis and Healthy Habits

The Inspiring Weight Loss Journey of Mustard

Everyone’s weight loss transformation is unique, and the same can be said for music producer Mustard. Known for his hit tracks with artists like Kendrick Lamar, Mustard has embarked on a remarkable journey toward a healthier lifestyle, showcasing resilience and determination along the way.

A Staggering Beginning

At his heaviest in 2018, Mustard stood at 5’7” and weighed 340 pounds. He grappled with serious health concerns, including a fatty liver and high blood pressure—conditions he was repeatedly reminded could be mitigated through weight loss. Frustrated by the constant cycle of advice, he knew he needed a significant change, not just for his health, but for his future.

Turning Point: The Loss of a Friend

A pivotal moment in Mustard’s transformation came with the tragic death of his close friend, Fredo Santana, in 2019. Santana faced kidney and liver failure due to substance abuse, a harsh reality that resonated deeply with Mustard. This loss served as a wake-up call; he poured out his remaining supply of “lean” and committed to sobriety, marking a new beginning in his health journey.

Initial Gains and Setbacks

Mustard started eating healthier and remained committed to his fitness goals, quickly shedding 70 pounds. However, like many, he faced setbacks when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, leading to feelings of anxiety and guilt. At one point, he weighed 270 pounds and realized, “If I get COVID, I am going to die.” This fear pushed him to take action.

Embracing a New Routine

To reclaim his health, Mustard began incorporating walking into his daily routine. What started as simple strolls around his block transformed into intense sprints. He captured the power of incremental progress, stating, “My walking turned into a sprint. Then three sprints turned into five.”

A key factor in his journey was leaning on friends for support. His cameraman introduced him to nutritious meals, such as grilled tilapia, spinach, and corn, which he enjoyed almost daily. This meticulous care for his diet paid off: three months into his renewed efforts, he felt proud to step on the scale and see a weight of 215 pounds.

Celebrating Milestones

By the time of the Super Bowl in February, Mustard weighed around 225 pounds. While he recognized this as a significant achievement, he remained focused on reaching his goal weight of 190 to 200 pounds, an ideal range he feels suits his body frame.

A New Passion: Tennis

In addition to cleaning up his diet and integrating regular exercise, Mustard found a newfound love for tennis, largely influenced by frequent collaborator Ella Mai. What began almost five years ago as a casual interest transformed into an obsession. He has taken part in various celebrity tennis events, often burning up to 1,000 calories during matches.

“I’m just an extremist,” Mustard remarked, reflecting on his dedication. “When I start to feel like I’m gonna be good at anything, I’m going to try to be better than all my friends.” This competitive spirit has driven him to excel, not just for himself but also for the community around him.

Continuous Growth and Future Goals

Mustard’s journey isn’t just about losing weight; it’s about a holistic transformation that encompasses physical health, mental well-being, and personal determination. By taking advantage of every opportunity for exercise and nutritional improvement, he continues to inspire countless others with his story.

Through his ups and downs, Mustard exemplifies the essence of perseverance. His commitment to a healthier lifestyle serves as a testament that change is possible, no matter the obstacles in the way. With every milestone, he’s closer to reaching his ultimate goal, both on and off the stage.
