Huston-Tillotson University has recently achieved a remarkable milestone, securing its position as the top jazz band from a historically Black college or university (HBCU), as well as the top jazz ensemble in Texas. This prestigious ranking not only highlights the ensemble’s exceptional talent but also places its student musicians among the elite collegiate jazz players in the United States.
A Fundraising Campaign for a Dream Opportunity
In December, the university launched a fundraising campaign aimed at supporting students’ expenses for an upcoming competition in New York City. This initiative was spearheaded by Huston-Tillotson’s President and CEO Melva K. Wallace, who emphasized the significance of this opportunity for the students. “This invitation gives our students access to a stage that shapes the future of jazz,” Wallace remarked. Her commitment to ensuring that every member of the orchestra could shine without financial concerns underscores the university’s dedication to fostering artistic expression and excellence.
The success of this fundraising initiative was significant, raising over $20,000 ahead of the trip. This financial support demonstrates the community’s belief in the potential of these young musicians and their dedication to elevating the jazz program at Huston-Tillotson.

Huston-Tillotson was among only ten collegiate ensembles selected nationwide to participate in this prestigious competition. Notably, it was the smallest institution chosen and one of only two HBCUs represented.
