TAMPA, Fla. — In a heartfelt celebration of musical heritage, the city of Tampa has unveiled a new historical marker paying tribute to the music legends who defined Central Avenue, a vibrant hub of cultural and artistic expression. The unveiling took place on what would have been the 95th birthday of the legendary Ray Charles, an artist whose influence transcended time and genre.
Central Avenue was once the pulsating heart of Tampa’s African American community, serving as an epicenter for musical and social gathering. It was in this dynamic environment that Ray Charles, a 17-time Grammy Award-winner, crafted his distinctive sound, recording his first song, “I Found My Baby There,” in 1947. This was a period when the neighborhood thrived as a center of Black business and entertainment.
The new marker, boldly captioned “Music Legends of Central Avenue,” commemorates the rich cultural and musical history that flourished in this area. Charles is just one of many influential musicians recognized on this plaque, which stands as a testament to the artistic contributions that emerged from what was known as the “Chitlin Circuit.” This network of venues provided vital performance opportunities for Black musicians during the era of segregation.
